This year's Property Industry Foundation (PIF) Annual Charity Yachting Regatta has proved to be the most successful yet, with more than $430,000 raised for children's charities.
Last Friday 2000 property industry plays took part in PIF's 10th Charity Yachting Regatta, sponsored by Investec Specialist Bank, with Whitehorse Constructions taking home The Bok Ell Cup – aboard Slingshot ahead of 129 competing corporate teams.
Funds raised from the event will be distributed to PIF's various building projects, which assist children's charities in the building and refurbishment of emergency accommodation, education centres and counselling facilities.
Current projects include the refurbishment of the Salvation Army's Macquarie Fields youth centre and the refurbishment of rooms at the Surry Hills Oasis College which provides training programs to disadvantaged young people, including the Get Skilled for Work (GSFW) prevocational course.
Six young people currently undertaking the GSFW course, who have been accepted into PIF's inaugural scholarship program, participated in the regatta on board Uptown Girl.
PIF Chief Executive Officer Rosemary Smithson said the Regatta provided an incredible experience for the young people who participated.
"They absolutely loved the experience of being out on the harbour. And the even doubled as a celebration for these young people, as they've been accepted into PIF's first scholarship program which aims to show how our industry can open doors to employment for disadvantaged youth," she said.
"The property industry has been overwhelmingly supportive of the new scholarship program, as well as this year's Regatta.
Since PIF's inception in 1996 more than $12 million has been raised for a range of PIF's approved charities through its core fundraising activities including annual events such as the Yatching Regatta, National Hard Hat Day, Charity Car Rally Challenge and Charity Ball.
